Calamus is a plant with a long and interesting history dating back to ancient times in medicine and cooking, where it is often used instead of laurel leaves, nutmeg or cinnamon. Nowadays in Lithuania, bread is baked on fragrant calamus leaves and candied rhizomes are eaten instead of ginger.

Calamus oil has an unusual aroma that is loved by perfumers who create oriental perfumes. It is often used as a scent fixer at concentrations as low as 0.01% in men’s, woody and oriental fragrances.

Calamus oil has shown good activity against various bacteria and fungi in studies, which allows it to be used in cosmetics as a preservative and for cleansing the skin from bacteria in acne [1]. It is an effective agent against mold and some other fungi, the effective concentration of which starts from 0.05% against some species. But if calamus oil is not very desirable in cosmetic products due to possible side effects, it is extremely promising as a natural means of saving plants. It was found that it inhibits the growth of various phytofungi, among which there are those that cause canker (manifested by spots on various parts of the plant), which usually affect gooseberries, currants, raspberries, clovers, birches, and aspens [2].

Calamus oil reduces skin pigmentation and can be included in the composition for removing pigment spots [3].
